One of the classes I took in college was a screenwriting workshop focusing on adapting a book to a movie. The professor was a working screenwriter based in California, so we would only meet once a month to sit down and talk about screenwriting. As a college class, I enjoyed it because it was finally a class that went at my own pace. I appreciated the independent study, which I could fit in-between my other classes. It was also a class that trusted me, a young and naive thing, as a storyteller.

The overall gist was that we had a stack of books that were purposefully hard to adapt, and over the course of the semester, we would be at least starting a screenplay adaptation of one of these books. (My book was Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. I had nothing to do with the Syfy TV adaptation).

It's because of this class that I have my current feelings around adaptations. They can be summarized into 3 big rules:

3 Rules of Good Adaptations )

Agree? Disagree? What makes a good adaptation for you? What's your favorite adaptation, and why does it work for you? What's an adaptation you think adheres to these rules that I didn't mention? Inquiring minds want to know!

Hello! I'm so happy that you (yes! you!) are writing for me in this exchange. I am looking forward to the fabulous gift that I am sure to receive.

This letter gives a bit more detail to my sign up requests, which I purposefully kept a bit sparse. Everything I list here is optional. If your muse is taking you in a direction that is not detailed here, then follow your muse! I would rather read a fic that the author had fun writing than one that was forced to meet standards that did not creatively jive with you, the creator.

General Likes & DNWs:
Things I Love:

  • Creative Setting AUs (weird west, steampunk, space western, solarpunk, space opera, etc)
  • complicated relationships
  • messy lesbians
  • enemies-to-lovers
  • slow burn
  • asexual characters finding love
  • grumpy/sunshine
  • pining/mutual pining
  • arranged marriage
  • fake relationships
  • happy endings
  • sexless physical intimacy

  • adult characters adopting lost/orphaned younger characters
  • found family when no one seems to like each other
  • angst with a happy ending
  • angst/whump
  • hurt/comfort
  • ostracized characters finding a friend/family
  • strong and independent characters being vulnerable/taken care of

  • character A is at their lowest and expects hate/punishment/pain but character B shows compassion instead
  • epistolary storytelling formats (diary entries, letters, news articles, social media posts, etc.)
  • creative or experimental forms of storytelling

If you'd like to write something smutty, I'd prefer some plot or character work to go with it as opposed to straight up porn without plot, such as someone learning something new about themselves or someone learning to be vulnerable in a sexual situation. When it comes to kink, it's about the trust/bond between two people!

  • bodily fluids other than cum being used for sex
  • characters under 16 having on-page sex (references to it happening off-screen are fine)

The Locked Tomb Series by Tamsyn Muir - Gideon Nav/Harrowhark Nonagesimus
My favorite thing about Gideon and Harrow is how much they outwardly hate each other, and yet they are unable to separate themselves from the other. I want to see these two fight against their marriage. Their union comes with claws and teeth. Their partner is not easy to love, but neither are they. I want these two involuntarily stuck with each other and not admitting their growing feelings until it’s too late.

Canon universe is fine, but I would love to see your take on their marriage in these canon-adjacent AUs:
  • Harrow Nova
  • Harrowhark Goes to the Ball
  • Harrowhark joins the Cohort
  • Gideon Raised by Blood of Eden
  • Gideon Raised by John/The Lyctors
Treats of any medium are welcome!

The following prompts are merely suggestions. If you think of an idea that you like better than what's presented, then I prefer you follow your muse!
  • Harrowhark is the newest recruit on a Cohort ship. Gideon is a BARI-star but is unable to connect with anyone outside the coffee shop (despite wanting to). They hate each other on sight. Harrowhark hates that Gideon tries to flirt with every girl that dares talk to her. Gideon hates that Harrowhark has a stick up her ass who knows Gideon’s every desire.
    • Gideon and Harrow wake up hungover and married.
    • Gideon and Harrow refuse to back down from a dare that goes too far, and they end up married anyway
  • As the biological heir of the Anastasian line, Harrow Nova’s only value to the Ninth is through her marriage, despite all attempts to prove herself through her cavaliership.
    • Reverend Daughter Gideon raises the funds to buy her marriage contract to keep her on the Ninth
    • Reverend Daughter Gideon had married Harrow Nova in secret to keep her safe, and now they must manipulate things so they can get married for real
    • Harrow Nova competes in a tournament/series of trials to win back her own marriage contract
  • A mysterious pilgrim (Gideon) arrives on the Ninth. Reverend Daughter Harrowhark is invested in keeping this stranger away from the Ninth’s secrets, but Gideon is a Blood of Eden agent and is determined to open the Tomb.
  • The Nine Houses have won a huge victory over Blood of Eden. One of their wing commanders (Gideon) attempts to negotiate a marriage with someone on the Ninth. Her ulterior motive is to open the Tomb to bring about the end of the Emperor Undying. Along the way, she attempts to court the Reverend Daughter as a means to get to the secrets she wants to find.
  • Blood of Eden has won a huge victory over the Nine Houses. This has granted them access to The Ninth House and the Tomb, that is their destination. Gideon marries Harrow to keep the Ninth population in check, but along the way realizes that Harrow’s people are desperate and in need of something more practical than the usurping of the Emperor Undying.
  • Prince Kiriona Gaia is supposedly looking to marry. Harrowhark joins the army of eligible suitors in an attempt to win her hand. The union will replenish the diminishing resources of the Ninth.
    • Harrow must compete in a series of trials to win Gideon’s hand.
    • Gideon and Harrow agree to marry on paper. Harrow gets her resources, Gideon gets to leave the Nine Houses. This arrangement means they get everything they want, right?
I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Treats of any medium are welcome!

Arcane: League of Legends - Caitlyn Kiramman/Vi

I think Season 2 did Vi dirty in terms of her character. We lost a sense of who she is: someone who is community-focused, who will set aside her needs for the sake of others, who listened to Vander’s lectures on leadership and took them to heart, who doesn’t care about herself so long as other people are happy.

For this exchange, I’d like a fic that remembers that Vi is the daughter of an influential community leader, and there is power in that position both politically and socially. I am not opposed to AUs, but I'd prefer a more creative setting (examples: historical fantasy set in the 1940s, weird west featuring werewolves, etc). If you write an AU, please keep their social and political status similar to the show.

In my mind, Vi falls for Caitlyn for 2 reasons:
  1. Caitlyn had everything handed to her. She can choose to fight for anything, and she chooses to fight for Vi.
  2. Caitlyn is the only person that prioritizes Vi. For the first time in Vi’s life, she found someone who will take care of her, instead of needing to be taken care of by Vi.
Likewise, Caitlyn falls for Vi for these reasons:
  1. Underneath Vi’s sharp and tough exterior lies a soft heart that is filled with kindness and compassion. Anyone can see that, but only Caitlyn can see the fatigue of keeping her guard up.
  2. If you pay attention, Caitlyn is discounted by nearly every character besides Vi, Jayce, and Mel. Vi is the first person to respect Caitlyn for her abilities, even after learning her family name.
Potential prompts
  • In order to keep the Kiramman succession alive, Caitlyn is smuggled out of Piltover and into Zaun, where she pretends to be married to Vi to hide her true identity.
  • Vi, daughter of Vander, refuses to marry for political reasons. But when the Noxian Empire looms on the horizon, Vi offers her hand in marriage to Caitlyn Kiramman of Piltover in order to bring The Lanes under Piltovan protection.
  • As children, Vi and Caitlyn were married for an alliance between Zaun and Piltover. Now that they’re both adults, they are expected to consummate their union or the alliance would fall apart. The only problem is:
    • Vi had been a prisoner of war and has serious touch issues as a result
    • Caitlyn pines for another (Maddie) and doesn’t want to go through with it
  • In order to bring fertility back to the lands of Zaun, Vi and Caitlyn are having a magical sex magic honeymoon to sow fertility in the fields. The only problem is Vi, whose orgasms are central to the magic, doesn’t want to be touched because of [insert canon trauma here].
  • Vi is the newly appointed werewolf pack leader without a mate. Caitlyn is in town on the run from a rival pack. Vi offers her protection if Caitlyn agrees to be her temporary mate for the season. The agreement is to part ways after a temporary stint, but the longer Caitlyn spends with Vi, the more she doesn’t want to leave.
  • Caitlyn from S3E7 Alternate Universe is magically transported to the Main Timeline where she is married to Vi. Vi helps her find a way back, but Caitlyn ends up falling for Vi. Back in her own timeline, alt!Caitlyn attempts to re-find Vi, only to discover that she was the child that died in the workshop explosion.

Arcane: League of Legends - Mel Medarda/Sevika
I’ve only seen fanart of this rarepair, and I would love to see fanfiction that depicts them as well. My letter goes into more detail about how I see them as a couple; you are not obligated to follow my logic. I would love to see your interpretation of this wonderful ship!

This is how I imagine their dynamic. You are, of course, welcome to imbue your own interpretation if you don't agree.

Mel is impressed by Sevika’s suave political maneuvering. Sevika is not pretty to look at, but she’s self-assured and tough and analytical. Sevika’s priority is the safety and comfort of her people, and she’s willing to do anything (including bend a few rules) to get it. Sevika is slow to trust, but Mel is patient and persistent and thoughtful. When Sevika finally learns to open up, she is rewarded with gentleness and compassion, two things she was resigned to never have for herself. It’s terrifying, but gods does it feel so good.

Sevika is caught off-guard by Mel. Mel’s respect comes too easily, and Sevika can’t shake the feeling that Mel is constantly manipulating the people around her. Sevika is impressed that Mel’s skin is tougher than it looks, and her political principles are uncompromising, even if setting them aside would make her ambitions easier to attain. Mel is able to take care of herself, but Sevika never sees Mel truly relax. When Sevika realizes this, she wants to be someone Mel can let go with.

Between the two of them, Mel is the first to express romantic intentions and make small, casual touches. But Sevika is the one to initiate physical intimacy beyond a kiss.

Here are a few prompts to get you started:
  • To secure an alliance with the Medarda family, the Piltover Council nominate Sevika as the unwitting marriage victim (as opposed to another Councillor’s grown-yet-unmarried child). Sevika uses the opportunity to negotiate bringing the Medarda resources through the undercity before they arrive to Piltover, which would boost the undercity’s economy and influence. Mel is impressed by the maneuver though not convinced, and Sevika shows off Zaun’s technology and ingenuity, which would help out the Noxians just as much as anything made by Piltover.

  • To spite her mother/family, Mel hires an escort (Sevika) to act as her spouse for several family functions over the course of several years. With every function, they realize how compatible they are as partners, and eventually fall in love.

  • Mel is supposed to marry Jayce Tallis, but at her bachelorette party, she makes the impromptu drunken decision to marry the hot butch stripper her maid of honor hired. Sevika is chasing dollars to bring down her medical debt (from getting her arm amputated), so when the drunk heiress and socialite Mel offers to pay off her entire debt for a Vegas-style wedding, Sevika agrees without question. In the aftermath, Sevika refuses to sign the annulment/divorce papers until all the money is in her bank account. Mel doesn’t want to pay, but what other choice does she have?

  • Medarda Family advisors keep pushing Mel to marry. Fed up, Mel proposes a contest and designs impossible tasks for contestants/suitors to complete. She will only marry someone who completes every task. Sevika, representing the interests of Zaun, signs up to compete in order to get close to Mel. Sevika doesn’t care about the contest, she just wants international recognition for Zaun’s global contributions. Their unexpected mutual respect ends up bringing them together.

Original WorkMy sign up features the list of pairings and additional tags that I find interesting. I don't have specific prompts for any of these pairings. So long as you don't include any of my DNWs, I'll be happy with whatever you're able to create.

If you need a little something extra, here are some ideas that I've been mulling over myself that you can sink your creative fingers into.
  • Love is a Choice (and I choose you)

  • You were afraid of me when we first met and that’s tainted every interaction I’ve ever had with you
  • The conqueror has no intention of actually consummating with the conquered royal, and this annoys the conquered royal

Hello and welcome to the start of what I hope to be a wonderful series of fanfiction recommendations. I have a couple themes in mind for future entries. For now, we're kicking things off with an interesting storytelling concept I've encountered: fanfiction that doesn't require knowledge of the original canon to enjoy.

Arcane Season 2 was released on Netflix in November 2024 and it's consumed a lot of my thoughts since. I fell in love with Arcane's first season, which is dramatic and rich and filled with lovable characters moving around in a world that felt lived in as much as it was fantastical. Thanks to the magic of Twitter, I heard of the artistic freedoms given to the animators and designers behind the visual aesthetic of Arcane, which only elevated my respect for the show. The more I re-watched season 1, the more I fell in love with it.

Unfortunately, the magic dissipates in Season 2. For as rich and vivacious Season 1 was, Season 2 falls flat for multiple reasons: the theme of socio-economic injustice is dropped entirely, characters lose their motivation and forward momentum, new characters aren't given any backstory or motivation, and the creators attempted to connect the show with the wider world of Runeterra, and thus League of Legends.

One of the ways to become a better storyteller is to break down why a story doesn't work for you. In this post, I'm breaking down the four reasons why, six months and multiple re-watches out, Arcane Season 2 fails to connect with me.

(As you can surmise, spoilers for the entirety of Arcane abound)
Arcane Season 2 Breakdown )

In Conclusion:

Despite the mastery of Arcane Season 1, Arcane Season 2 fails to live up to the expectations it establishes. Do you agree? Do you disagree? I am open to having discussions in my comments so long as things are kept civil.

Thank you for reading my very long thoughts about Arcane. I am very glad to finally get them out somewhere.

I love Murderbot. And in celebration of its upcoming new television show, I'm currently rereading the entire series. While I recommend newcomers read the books in sequential order, I'm giving them to you from my least favorite to my most favorite. At the time of this post, The Murderbot Diaries consists of seven books.

As a disclaimer, all of these books are bangers. I love every one, but some I love more than others.

Let's get to it!  )

Do you agree? Do you disagree? Which entry in The Murderbot Diaries is your favorite? How optimistic are you about the new Murderbot Diaries TV series?

I am so excited to see what you (yes, you!) will create for me. I am fairly easy to please, so don't sweat this assignment. If your muse takes you in a different direction you think I would like, please go in that direction!

Princess Mononoke

  • Eboshi/San
I've been seeing this on a lot of exchanges lately, and it has instigated the brainworms. Princess Mononoke wasn't my first Studio Ghibli but it was the most formative.

Eboshi is such a charismatic and intelligent character. I hesitate to call her a villain because everything she does has a veneer of kindness behind it, but she is certainly an antagonist. I love her morals and I love her competence and I love the loyalty she inspires in the people she governs.

San, on the other hand, is feral, angry, reckless, and a great foil to Eboshi. She is protecting her own and going about it with nothing but gut instinct and guerrilla tactics. She's rough and unrefined and growing into a woman that doesn't care about finesse or precision.

For these two together, I'd like to see them learn from each other. Eboshi learns to let go of her image and San learns to attack with grace. San learns what it means to work with others, and Eboshi learns the necessary strength of independence. I also love how, given their differences, they both have hearts of gold at their very center but they can't see the other's.

Some prompts:
  • AU where Ashitaka never comes to Iron Town. Does Eboshi kidnap San when she attacks? Does Eboshi save San from death by mob?
  • Post-canon where Eboshi takes regular trips into the forest to learn more about it. San follows her, untrustworthy, but manages to teach Eboshi the ways of the forest and how taking care of it means it will take care of you.
  • Post-canon where San is gravely injured and nursed back to health by Eboshi.

Sailor Moon (1992 Anime)

  • Hino Rei/Tsukino Usagi
  • Seiya Kou/Tsukino Usagi
  • Kaiou Michiru/Tenoh Haruka
Sailor Moon is my O.G. fandom! I loved that girls were kicking ass but they didn't have to mimic boyishness or disregard femininity in order to do it. In fact, they explored all the different ways a woman could be strong, or has to be strong, in their day to day lives. Sailor Moon was a celebration of being a woman that, in my memory, I can appreciate as an adult a lot more than I could appreciate when I was a child and preteen.

Rei/Usagi: These two argue so much, and everyone calls them really good friends when they do. I would love an exploration of your best friend being the person you disagree with the most. That your best friend is the only person that you feel comfortable disagreeing with. So what happens when your best friend agrees with you about something? What happens when those antagonistic feelings that you have relied on so much to help center you are pulled out from under you? I don't know, that sounds interesting to me.

Seiya Kou/Tsukino Usagi: In the Sailor Stars season, I actually really loved the star-crossed (pun intended), slow-burn romance growing between these two. I would love to see moments, in canon or canon-adjacent, where they really do kiss or take things a little further. Where Usagi allows herself to let go of the responsibilities of being Queen Serenity and gives in to her desires. I would love to see her defend love as she feels it. I would love to see her grasp onto it and experience it and realize that it is worth fighting for. As long as she and Seiya both believe in it, then it is worth being the only two people who support them being together.

Michiru/Haruka: These two fascinate me. They are an item. They flirt with other people to make the other jealous or possessive. They are attached at the hip and so, so sure that the other is going to be there for them. They are unhealthy codependence but don't want others to know the extent of it. I am feral. I want a fic where their loyalty to each other is tested and maybe, just maybe, one of them thinks that this might be the end. Only to spring back together as though it would have been obvious all along. Have fun with that one.

The Locked Tomb Series

The Locked Tomb was the book series that got me writing fiction and participating in fandom that was not collecting fanart and constantly re-reading the series. I love this series to death. I love the memes, I love its chaos, I love the foreshadowing, and I especially love the characters. I have different preferences and thoughts for each pairing, so I'll go into a little more detail with each one. For all of these pairings, feel free to completely change the setting and backstories so long as everyone's dynamics remain relatively the same in canon.

Gideon Nav/Harrowhark Nonagesimus: The ship I sailed at the very beginning. I love how in canon, they've spent two books separated and spent the entire time thinking about the other, even when it seems they weren't. This is the ship that would literally read anything for; I am partial to Modern AUs, the canon AUs at the end of Harrow the Ninth, and anything where they start out absolutely hating each other. Don't be afraid to get dark with these two either. Either they're hatefucking or they're both dealing with something and taking it out on each other. Let your imagination go wild.

Gideon Nav/Ianthe Tridentarius: I knew I wanted these two to be best friends when I read their interactions at the end of Harrow the Ninth. They hate each other but they can't quit each other because they're all they other has. Would love to see your version of the six months before Nona the Ninth. Did Ianthe propose marriage to Gideon as a way to increase her political power? What does Gideon do to mess with Ianthe? Do they bone and call out Harrow's name when they each come?

Camilla Hect/Harrowhark Nonagesimus: This ship is fascinating to me. The most loyal woman in the world finds something she wants outside of the man she serves. The most determined woman in the world finds someone who is, for once, patient and supportive of her ambition. They kind of fit wrongly, but I'd love to see them at least try. Maybe Harrow is conducting an experiment. Maybe Camilla needs to defy Palamedes a bit. Maybe they both need a relationship that requires work only to wonder if it's even worth it in the first place. Maybe they're queer platonic partners! Go wild!

Camilla Hect/Our Lady of the Passion: Pash wears machetes on her thighs and Camilla says that's uncool as she also wears her two blades. I think Pash draws some inspiration from Camilla, she won't admit to it but she does. And Camilla is fascinated by Pash in return, either as a rival who grew proficient in a weapon in a short amount of time, or as someone else who swore her life to the protection of someone important.

Coronabeth Tridentarius/Our Lady of the Passion: Coronabeth is used to everyone fawning over her, and Pash is maybe not the first person to be antagonistic as a result, but she's the first one to really cut Coronabeth. These two are great Enemies to Lovers material. Coronabeth can't shake her upbringing, and Pash tries so hard to get Coronabeth to break away once and for all. She fails, of course, because where Coronabeth is refined and calculating, Pash is unrefined and in over her head. They're great. Chef's kiss.

Cytherea the First/Mercymorn the First: These two spent millenia together. If they ever got together, was it a slow spiral of circling each other until it finally happened? Did it start from a one night stand and then grew into an on-again-off-again where they couldn't quit each other? Did they keep it a secret from everyone else? Would love to see these two through the ages, bonus points if they are absolutely not good for each other.

Mercymorn the First/Cristabel Oct: I would love love LOVE to hear more about Cristabel. From what little we get in the text, she sounds so interesting. She was a nun! She was Mercymorn's best friend! She showed Jod how to manipulate the soul! She is a fanatic and probably had the idea of a suicide pact with Alfred before anyone else. Would love to see Mercymorn fall in love with Cristabel only to learn that Cristabel was in love first. In my own headfanon, Cristabel was a chaste nun and remained chaste throughout the pre-Resurrection timeline. Her first time was post-Resurrection, and probably with Mercy. Would be great to see something like that play out in a fic.

Arcane League of Legends

  • Cait/Vi
  • Sevika/Mel Medarda
  • Sevika/Vi
When Arcane first came out, I could not get enough. The story was big and thorough but the characters were only concerned about their own small parts.

I was mostly invested in the relationship between Caitlyn and Vi. Their arc is all about learning to let go of their own biases because the people they've always considered their enemy is actually not that bad. I love that "we're not so different, you and I" dynamic and the slow burn spiral of them rotating around the other, still sizing them up, and not realizing their growing loyalty until it's put to the test.

I am also fond of taking that dynamic and putting it in a setting change AU, like a modern AU or something outrageous like a Western or Science Fiction setting. If you have it in you, you can melt my heart by recreating your favorite romcom with these two.

Getting back to complicated women, Sevika/Mel is a pairing I never anticipated to like until I saw fanart of Sevika railing Mel. It's the tropes of the rugged street rat and the refined princess amplified. The rugged street rat believes in whatever she's fighting, and she's discerning with where she puts her loyalty. The princess, meanwhile, is extremely politically savvy and can talk her way out of any situation. Would love something that explores how these two might get together in canon.

Finally, there's Sevika/Vi, which is rife with hatesex and Enemies and Lovers. I don't want Enemies to Lovers, I want Enemies AND Lovers. They fought and then they fucked, but they still hate each other. I want that.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I am partway through what is technically a re-watch but often feels like a first watch of this show. As I write this letter, I am halfway through season 3. If I factor in that I am taking in about 5-7 episodes in a week, then I should be somewhere in season 5 when the collection is revealed. I would prefer if I am not spoiled for anything, so anything exploring moments or relationships in seasons 1 thru 3 is fair game. That being said, let me explain why I like this show.

There is something comforting about this show and how it's told. I think television today forgot how fun the "adventure of the week" format was. Television today also forgot that episodes that don't drive the plot forward are just as vital for character development. I love how we get to sit with a situation for several episodes, even a full season, before it's resolved. I love that this show requires you to invest in the long-term. We need to bring back 22-episode seasons.

Enough about that! I have less than three seasons with Cordelia Chase and I wanted to protect her as early as episode 1. The narrative wants to paint her as shallow and self-centered, but I think there is a lot more to her than fashion and relationships and reputation. She got a good score on the SATs! She continues to hang around the Scooby Gang and help people! Yet even there she's not really taken seriously. I would love to see some angst with Cordelia and how lonely it is being a high-femme woman that no one takes seriously; not even the people that feel sympathy for a vampire really listen to her. There is something anti-feminist about everyone's treatment of Cordelia. I think it would be fun to address that.

Another character I really like is Faith, what little I've seen of her so far. Faith has had a bad time and is trying to make do with what she's got, which is basically a hotel room and the occasional patrol with Buffy. Does she even attend school? I think it would be fun if she talks the big talk about getting it down with some guys, but has actually gotten down with women. Similar to how Buffy "coming out" as a Slayer to her mom is played like a kid coming out as gay, I want Faith to be the experience of coming out and then getting kicked out. But, you know, she's actually gay.

And then there's Buffy herself. She's a jock, she mocks the nerds, she used to be a popular prep, she's got all these fun quips lined up for every occasion. She's great, and I would like to see her explore what else she could be into, like nerdy best friends and other Slayers. Have fun with that!

One final note, if you're going to include a background Buffy/Angel pairing, I would love if Angel were genderswapped. So long as they keep their dreamy, puppy dog eyes and brooding mouth and exposed upper body. Yum!

The Expanse

  • Bobbie Draper/Camina Drummer
  • Bobbie Draper/Clarissa Mao
  • Camina Drummer/Naomi Nagata
  • Chrisjen Avasarala/Camina Drummer
The Expanse was one of those shows where I needed to binge it in order to like it. And once I was in, I was in. I love the level of competence of the characters and how their challenges are either proportional to their skills or they're in over their head but they do it anyway. It also takes place in a space environment without gravity engines, which I absolutely love and appreciate as someone who loves a world with great worldbuilding. I just think this show is great at taking badass characters and putting them in situations that stretch them beyond their capabilities.

Bobbie/Camina: This is a rarepair that I never thought I would like. Camina is too loyal to the Belt to fall for someone from an inner planet, which means Bobbie would have to prove her loyalty to the Belt in order to win Camina's trust. For Bobbie, I see her getting weak knees for someone who's not afraid to boss her around. I can see this ship being antagonistic as a way to navigate their sexual tension. At the height of an argument, instead of throwing a punch, they kiss (or bite but it's kinda like kissing).

Bobbie/Clarissa: I can see these two getting together because they're a good fuck. Bobbie needs to release some steam, and Clarissa wants to be tossed around. I can see Clarissa finding comfort in someone she knows can handle her. And I can see Bobbie being a good top/domme for that. If you want to make this kinky, go right ahead! I would love to see it.

Camina/Naomi: What I like about these two is their relationships has a foothold in the canon. Camina provides a place for Naomi to be around more Belters, which is a community Naomi misses. Naomi and Camina both gave their loyalty to an Earther, so understand that others see that as a betrayal even when their intentions are good. As leaders, they make a great team. Would love to see an AU where they got to be a power couple/battle couple.

Camina/Avasarala: These are two powerhouses in their own environment, so what happens when one goes into the other's territory? Is Camina accommodating or not showing Avasarala the easy way out of things? Is Avasarala accommodating or lauding over Camina for having stronger bones? I would like to see these two see each other's strengths and wanting to try a taste of it.

Cosmoknights

  • Pandora/Tara
  • Kate/Princess Scottie
I first read Cosmoknights earlier this year, and I knew right away that I needed to see what sort of fanfiction existed for it. Unfortunately, there is zero fanfic on AO3 for Cosmoknights. Zero! I may write my own eventually, but until then, I shall request it in my exchanges.

What I love about this graphic novel (or webcomic because it can be read online for free) is everything. I love the idea of the princesses being fought over, I love the hints of cosmoknights being champions for patrons who actually get to marry the princesses. I love the space adventures and the fact that everyone is in love with somebody else. I love that this feels like a space adventure story from my childhood, except now everybody's a queer girl but no one cares that everyone is a queer girl. A ragtag crew on a ship that doesn't get along has revolution at the front of their mind, not romance (though the romance is definitely there). Here is a link to read Cosmoknights online if you are interested.

Pandora/Tara Their relationship fascinates me. As children, Pandora was a secret friend to Tara, who wasn't allowed friends, I guess? As adults, Tara and Pan had the potential to clash as two revolutionaries with opposing goals. I would love to see more of their childhood friends to enemies dynamic. I want to see messiness and them not getting along like they used to because their motivations no longer align in a cohesive way. There's heartache in growing apart from someone you were close to. It's a natural thing to happen, but it hurts anyway. And I want these girls to hurt.

Kate/Princess Scottie I love Kate. Kate is perhaps my favorite character. She's a hacker. She changes her appearance on a whim. She may or may not be connected to a larger revolutionary group bent on destroying the princess-as-warprize system. She is so, so against anybody who grew up with privilege and money that it's suspicious. And yet, she can be a friend when you need her to. Show her that you're not out to get her, and she'll stand by your side. I love that Princess Scottie is fascinated by her and I want to explore more of that relationship. There is more to Princess Scottie than we see in the comic so far, and I want to see her standing up for Kate and proving herself as a powerful ally to have. I want Kate's worldview challenged. I want Scottie to get comfortable in her discomfort. These two should have a "we're not so different" type arc. Where Pan and Tara go from love to hate, these two should go from hate to love.

Original Works

  • Troublemaking Bad Girl at School/Goody Two-Shoes Assigned to Tutor Her
  • Werewolf/Little Red Riding Hood
  • Rich Vampire Patron/Artist She Hires as a Bloodbag
  • Lonely Frontier Farmer/Mail Order Bride With a Past
  • Ancient Forgotten Goddess/Clueless Historian Obsessed With Her
  • Reclusive Witch Living in the Woods/Wounded Werewolf Looking for Shelter
  • Mermaid/Wild Woman Living in a Cave by the Sea
  • Lady Trapped in a Tower/Lady Who Can Turn into a Hawk
  • Knight Sworn to Hunt Witches/Childhood Friend Who is Secretly a Witch
  • Cowgirl/Resident of a Cattle Town
The following is a list of ideas/prompts for each pairing. As mentioned earlier, if your muse is taking you elsewhere, go where your muse takes you!

Troublemaking Bad Girl at School/Goody Two-Shoes Assigned to Tutor Her: I love the idea of corruption with this prompt. Does the Bad Girl recognize something familiar in the Good Girl and help to break out of her shell/come out of the closet? Does the Good Girl want to prove that she can have just as much fun as the Bad Girl and they end up crashing into each other? Is the Bad Girl actually the brightly colored prep and the Good Girl an academic goth? If you are also a fan of those YA high school romances, lean into that, except now it's better because it's gay.

Werewolf/Little Red Riding Hood: So Amanda Seyfried has this cover of the song "Little Red Riding Hood" that is soooo cool and sexy. This prompt makes me think of this. This prompt also makes me think of this other fic I read where Red and Wolf were in love but could only be together during the full moon. This is a great fairy tale about a girl discovering that her normal is actually monstrous, but I want her to fall in love with that.

Rich Vampire Patron/Artist She Hires as a Bloodbag: This prompt is kind of borne from my own wish to have a patron that supports me and my lifestyle and in exchange I write a little story on their behalf every so often. Except instead of doing an art for the patron, the patron takes my blood. Is the bloodbag loyal to the patron? Does the patron have other bloodbags in their payroll? Maybe the patron vampiress is the only one who can see the artist's work. I love the idea of someone clinging to a single lifeline and truly believing that is all they will ever need, when it is perhaps the most unhealthy lifeline ever.

Lonely Frontier Farmer/Mail Order Bride with a Past: What is the Bride running from? Why does the Farmer order a companion? I would love if the Farmer is resistant to the idea of sex when the Bride first arrives. Perhaps she's asexual? Or perhaps she ordered a Bride to deal with the more domestic affairs of running a farm and not for a sexual reason at all. Maybe the Farmer is lacking in such self-confidence that they take pains to leave the Bride alone, but the Bride is extremely curious about their new, enigmatic spouse. Moreover, I love the idea of being in forced proximity to someone, of love as a choice you make every day, of love being something that happens slowly, over time, and when you are not expecting it.

Ancient Forgotten Goddess/Clueless Historian Obsessed with Her: There are so many delicious ways this can go. Is the Historian an academic by profession or by hobby? Is the Historian finding refuge in seeking forgotten knowledge because their life otherwise sucks? From the Goddess's perspective, what sort of Goddess is she? What drew the Historian to her? Is the Goddess miffed that she got interrupted from a nice lifetime of not being remembered, or is she excited to finally have a follower again? Go wild with this prompt. I'm not sure what I want exactly other than this sounds very fun.

Reclusive Witch Living in the Woods/Wounded Werewolf Looking for Shelter: This prompt satisfies my iddy of one beaten and vulnerable spirit finding another and finding comfort in each other's scars. Was the wolf injured because they were cast out from their pack? Perhaps the Wtich learned independence because no one would help her with anything anyway? I could use more werewolf stories in my life.

Mermaid/Wild Woman Living in a Cave by the Sea: Who is the wild woman? Did she used to be civilized? Is she a runaway selkie? Was she the little mermaid with a bad ending? And who is the mermaid? Why is she drawn to this wild woman? Does she want to help her or destroy her? Or maybe the mermaid is injured and the wild woman cares for her? Or they both knew each other previously and now awkwardly rebuild their old relationship?

Lady Trapped in a tower/Lady Who Can Turn Into a Hawk: I am realizing that this is the third prompt here that is similar to a fairy tale. This prompt sounds like Rapunzel finding a friend in someone other than her prince. I would very much like an ending where she does not find refuge with a prince. Instead, she should find refuge with a friend, or "friend" as it were. Wink wink.

Knight Sworn to Hunt Witches/Childhood Friend Who is Secretly a Witch: Another iddy trope is a character's intentions being drastically misinterpreted by others. Maybe the Witch cast a spell that had a positive effect, but because magic has such a bad reputation that everyone thought it was an evil curse. Maybe the Knight is hunting Witches to save them, but the Witch thinks it's for the bounty on her head.

Cowgirl/Resident of a Cattle Town: You know the old Western trope of a cowboy traveling through town, having an effect on a local, and then riding off into the sunset? And the more interesting characters are the stationary ones who encounter the cowboy? I would like something like that, but the cowboy is a woman and she's charismatic and polite and sexy. Would love that.

I'm trying a new thing where I'm reading a non-fiction book at the same time I'm reading a fiction book. So far it's gone well. I've read almost 2 books of fiction and 1/2 of a non-fiction book.

My relationship with non-fiction has mostly been "but I don't liiiiike it" which is silly considering that I enjoy long articles on the internet. And what's a non-fiction book than a series of articles with a common theme? Hence, my decision that any non-fiction I read should be read in conjunction with a work of fiction.

Another new thing I'm trying is a new bit of HTML I found somewhere. Hopefully this works!

NONFICTION: The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green (click me to read more)

Most of my vlogbrothers content has been consumed via their podcast "Dear Hank and John." That's on haitus with Hank's recent cancer diagnosis. Wishing him well on his recovery! In any case, I listened to them promote The Anthropocene Reviewed when it came out in hardcover. And with my recent non-fiction decision above, I wanted to make sure this book was on my shelf. I am unfamiliar with the podcast the book is based on, but I am delighted by these essays. The topics range from the big (Humanity's Temporal Range) to the small (Halley's Comet) to the random (Penguins of Madagascar), and the end of each essay is paired with a rating on a five-star scale. I made it a personal project to pencil in the final rating on the Table of Contents of the book, which makes finishing the book a completionist game. I must record what all the ratings are! And it must be recorded after I read the essay in question! I rarely rate a book on a five-star rating, but I give The Anthropocene Reviewed four stars.

FICTION: Chef's Choice by TJ Alexander (click me to read more)

I picked up this book solely because an online friend posted about it on BeReal and said the transmasc love interest was almost literally them, right down to the French. So I read it and loved it. The characters were lovable and there was pining and fake dating and everything was so queer. I wouldn't call myself a stranger to the transgender experience, but I am not transgender myself so wouldn't know if this book takes a simplistic approach for the sake of a cisnormative readership to some type of detriment. Anyway, this book is worth picking up if you enjoy queer romances of the rom-com variety.

FICTION: Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle (click me to read more)

I'm not done reading this yet, but I am having an absolute blast! I will definitely be finished sometime in the next day or so after this post is posted. This reads to me more like an adventure story with a major horror component, but that does not take away from my fun. I love the main character. She starts as an ardent Christian but develops away from that mindset in a realistic way. I like how, throughout the course of the book, faith is not actively discarded as being the source of evil, it's the people who manage the big religious institution (cult) of her hometown. A book that acknowledges the difference between faith and bad people is rare to find. Normally its faith that's given a bad rap. Let me know what you thought about this book if you've read it! I'm dying to talk to others about it.

Have you read any of these? Let me know what you thought of them. Meanwhile, here's some various and sundry to keep you updated on my life.

>> I recently acquired my dad's old record player and a small percentage of his records. I can get it to play if I hook it up through my television, but it really needs a speaker set of its own. So I'm putting that on my birthday list for this year, in addition to a few other items I already told my mom about.

>> I also have my dad's old guitars. He wasn't much of a musician, but he did love music. I have two guitars now. For a long, long time, I thought his old Kay was hard to play because the strings were high on the frets. But I plucked around on both guitars the other day and learned that no, I'm just a whimp with no callouses on my fingers. :P I'll be building those up in the next few weeks as I look for a guitar teacher in my area.

>> I have a date tonight! I've been trying to do more with dating, and I'm fearful that I'm somehow doing it all Wrong because this is the first time in my life I'm actively pursuing it. If my date decides to reschedule again (we rescheduled last week, probably because it was too soon for her), I might tell her that we have one more shot before I call it quits on my end. This will be our first date too, so I hope we hit it off. She's into superheros and went to a Superman convention earlier this year. If we start going steady (omg what an old term!) I'll have to start watching the DC shows on the CW, an act I would not mind AT ALL. Anyway, I'm excited to get to know her tonight. If you have tips for flirting or tips on finding dates, do let me know!

[EDIT] I just posted this and not an hour passed before she texted to cancel for tonight TT-TT Said she got interested in someone else. So I guess I'm treating myself to some yummy takeout for dinner. But first, I think, a walk for ice cream.

Hello! I am so happy you're writing for me! Consider my preferences more like guidelines. If your muse takes you in a direction not listed or mentioned below, follow it! I will love whatever you write for me <3

That being said, for the Trick or Treat Exchange, I am more interested in Tricks. As this is a Halloween-themed exchange, I would love Halloween-themed or horror fics for my gift. I will accept exchange treats (of the extra exchange gifts variety) in either Tricks or Treats, in any medium, with a preference for Tricks.

I hope that's clear! If not, you can comment anonymously here, on my Tumblr, or pass a message through the pumpkinkingmod.

Just some thoughts I had while rewatching Arcane, posted under the cut. They are very disorganized and not at all coherent (maybe a little coherent).

I watched Arcane again and this is what I thought )

Let me know your thoughts on Arcane. I really like this show, and we've gone so far without new material that I'm devolving into writing a bunch of silly AUs with my new pair of fictional lesbians. Second season announcement when?

I got tired of comments being only partly visible, so I saved the hex codes of the colors (because I like them) and changed the theme into something else. Let me know what you think!

My only annoyance (thus far) is I want the background colors flipped, so the lavendar is on top and the gray is on the bottom. But it seems the bottom background color is associated with something else I don't want to change, so we may be stuck with this until I get used to it.

If you visit my DW proper, I hope you like what you see!

My fic for the Into a Bar crossover event is live! Has actually been live for a couple months! Gideon Nav walks into a bar and meets . . . Deanna Troi!

I had a lot of fun writing this one. When I started, I thought it would be somewhere around 1,500 words. The final product is double that! So I guess it kinda got away from me a bit. I knew from the start that the “bar” in question would be Ten Forward, and the idea to put it in the middle of the River and have Gideon present her own influence on it was a natural choice.

So here it is, Gideon and Deanna bonding time, featuring a bar I lovingly dubbed Nine Backward. Click the title below to read it on AO3!

TITLE: Welcome to Hell, also known as Nine Backward
FANDOMS: The Locked Tomb, Star Trek: The Next Generation
SUMMARY: With the newfound mind behind those eyes—golden like a class M star—all she did was inhale and exhale as though resurfacing from underwater. In that breath, Deanna understood three things:
One: she was the influence on Ten Forward’s horrific, dreamlike changes.
Two: Deanna was here to help her.
Three: She was incredibly, incredibly troubled.

I forget my inspiration for signing up for this exchange. Maybe I was just excited about writing and receiving a fic well above the normal fic exchange minimum. I didn't write a letter to document what I was feeling at the time, so we will go with "I wanted to write something long."

To my surprise, I received two fics for this exchange! Making it the third in a row that I received two fics! I know this streak of good karma isn't going to last. I am grateful for it anyway. But enough about that. Let's get to the fics!

I found a fun little ask game on Tumblr, and I decided to share a little something (or a lot of somethings) about myself here using that ask game. If you're curious, please read on! This wrap up is a long time coming. Mostly because the preamble is very personal and I am, in my natural state, a private person. But if I learned anything, it was that being vulnerable and asking for what you want will get you what you need. Such a treat for an exchange you didn't sign up for.

So I would like to extend my deep gratitude to [archiveofourown.org profile] happinesssceceit and [archiveofourown.org profile] Koschei_B. They gifted me wonderful fics, and I cherish both their kindheartedness and their fics.

I would also like to thank the mods of the Hurt/Comfort Exchange 2022. You were really nice and considerate. The comfort to my hurt.

First and foremost, I'm so excited that you are writing a fic for me! Please do not stress about this assignment in the slightest. I am looking forward to the fic you'll be writing.

I'm going to do something a little different with this exchange letter. Instead of explaining why I like certain ships or fandoms (which would just be repeating what I've said in previous letters), I'm going to explain why I chose the additional tags I chose (if I feel like an explanation needs to be given) and then offer prompts. If you would like to see previous letters for my general likes and dislikes, my sign up should have all that. This letter is meant to be a supplement.

Some tags have more explanations and prompts than others. That doesn't mean anything, just that I was feeling particularly inspired when writing that part of the letter. I want all prompts and AUs equally! If something doesn't have prompts under it, consider that permission to do whatever you want. If a tag does have a prompt under it, consider that permission to do whatever you want too. All this to say, everything here is a suggestion. Feel free to adhere or ignore as you seem fit.

This letter is going to be pretty long, so I apologize in advance for subjecting you to its length and odd organization. I'm putting all the additional tags behind cuts for your convenience.

[EDIT] Here are easy hyperlinks to all the prompts by fandom! (Links go comments on this post):
themorikelife: illustration of a skeleton dabbing against a black background (DabbingSkeleton)

When Love, Death & Robots first came out, I tried to watch it. My first two episodes were “Sonnie’s Edge” and “The Witness.” The former was actually pretty cool; the latter was not. Both shorts featured sexual assault in some way shape or form, something that I regularly DNW in the fandom exchange letters you’ll find here. I called it after two episodes, though—I wasn’t in the mood for a speculative fiction anthology written for dudes by dudes.

I have a friend who really likes Love, Death & Robots and it was through her assurance that not every episode touched on sexual assault that I decided to watch it. And it was because of her excitement that I spent a weekend with her to do so. I had a great time and decided to write this huge review. Part 1 is my commentary on the series overall, and Part 2 is mini-reviews of all the episodes.

Overall Review )

Overall, I had a great time watching this series. The second season is the strongest, in my opinion. Short reviews on each episode sorted by season are below the next cut (the order comes from Wikipedia). In my reviews, I warn for things I would expect if these stories were on AO3: nudity, swearing, and smoking are unwarned while things like gore and sexual assault have warnings.

Love Death & Robots season 1 ) Love Death & Robots season 2 ) Love Death & Robots season 3 )

I’d love to talk Love, Death & Robots if you also have thoughts! Agree with my assessment? Disagree? Want recommendations of which ones to skip or watch? The comment section is open!

I found this prompt-meme via the Yuletide Discord server, which is where I find a lot of the exchanges I participate in. Someone had asked about a drabble meme, and someone else was running a drabble meme even though it wasn’t the original one searched for. I was curious, so I checked it out.

About five drabbles is what I had the energy to write. Though I loved looking through the prompts and reading the drabbles written for them! I wrote for the prompts that inspired me, and I received a drabble in response!

It wasn’t until later in May that I realized there was an AO3 collection of all the drabbles. So I added all of mine in a single day. Apologies to the people who subscribe to my AO3, if you’re seeing this. I know I probably write a bunch more than what you expected initially. This is me sending love and I hope my fic helps you read something unexpected. <3

Hello! I am excited about this exchange and so happy that you’ll be writing for me. Just in case you need it, this is blanket permission to go wherever your muse takes you!

I am excited for this exchange because there are so many heterosexual relationships that I would love more if they were both women and kept the same dynamics they had in canon.

My general likes and DNWs are in my sign up on AO3, so I’ll only repeat them at the very end. In the meantime, this is what I like about all the fandoms and ships I’m requesting.

I am so, so excited that you (yes you!) will be making something for me. I already know it’s going to be fabulous.

This letter is more of a guide than a manual. It’s here to give insight, provide clarification, and answer questions I cannot anticipate. If you are stuck between doing things your way and doing things my way, do the thing that feels right for the story. At the end of the day, I enjoy a quality fic more than a fic that followed my preferences to its detriment. If you still have questions, my Tumblr has anonymous turned on. :) Or you can ask the mods to pass on the question. Either will reach me!

I prefer a fic or podfic for my gift. I will accept treats of any medium!

Below the cut is further explanation of why I like each pairing. My sign up is organized in such a way that any additional tag can go with any couple in the request. I have some suggested prompts for one fandom, and it’s up to you whether you follow them or not.

Most importantly, I really hope you have fun!
